When treating patients who are taking
medication, the practitioner has to be constantly vigilant of possible
influences and risks that could be detrimental to the patient and
subsequently the practitioner and his/ her career.
This 7-hour
course will provide the most recent information on related medications,
improve better understanding and be of assistance to recognise and
prevent risks when deciding on a specific modality of
treatment.
The
following aspects will be addressed in this course:
· The
Autonomis, Sympathetic & Parasympathetic nervous systems.
· Respiratory
drugs.
· Corticosteroïdes
· Asthma:
new approaches.
Other important issues that will be looked into are the regulatory
status of prescriptions and dispensing, as well as medico-legal aspects
controlled by the Medicine Control Council and legislation.

This one-day workshop will cover the pathology
of tendonopathy and
other soft tissue injuries, like muscle strains and ligament sprains.
This includes Achilllies tendonopathy, patella tendonopathy and upper
leg muscle strains i.e. hamstrings and quads strains.
Manual
therapy techniques and long term management and rehabilitation of soft
tissue injuries, including strapping will be covered.
At
the end of the workshop physiotherapists will have the tools to treat
athletes from the level of the "Weekend warrior" to the elite
sportsperson.

Today
the Pilates Method is considered a valuable exercise tool to assist
therapists in rehabilitation and performance enhancement. This one-day
workshop, presented on a practical level, will explore the unique
Principles and Concepts of Pilates and how to apply it in a therapeutic
environment.
With
focus on core stabilization, the course will look at how small
apparatus such as the small ball, theraband and other small pieces of
equipment can be utilized to increase the patient's range of movement
and improve alignment.

- The assessment of foot and ankle injuries.
- Associated pathologies like lateral ligament
sprains, sinus tarsi syndrome, posterior impingement and Achilles

This course will
highlight the aims of
physiotherapy management in focussing on a holistic approach to the
treatment of adult and paediatric patients with commonly seen
respiratory diseases, including HIV.
Each
bodily system (cardiac, respiratory, renal, etc) will be dealt with by
reviewing the anatomy, physiology medical management, analysis of
arterial blodd gases, lung function tests and chest x-rays.
The risks for
therapist to treat such patients and the necessary precautions that
should be taken will also be addressed.
At the end of the
course the physiotherapist will be able to:
- Identify
the main and potential problems related to these diseases, through
clinicalreasoning and integration of information obtained.
- Confidently assess a cardiopulmonary
patient.

One
in three people aged 65+ falls annually and related injuries account
for the largest proportion of all injury-related hospitalisations and
deaths.
This hands-on, clinically applied, course will give an
overview of 'falls' with focus on the causes, incidence rate,
implications and the crucial role of the physiotherapist in the
prevention and management of falls injuries.
At
the end of this course participants should be able to:
- Have the necessary insight in this
occurrence, with in-depth knowledge of all the causes;
- Understand the financial, emotional and
physical implications; Understand the benefit of prevention;
- Appreciate the various internationally
applied assessment tools to identify a "fall" or the potential thereof;
- Do a thorough physical examination to
decide on either a prevention model or an appropriate management
programme;
- Appreciate the range of specific
exercises, as well as the roles of other disciplines in prevention.
The
Australian model that will be presented will give participants insight
into an internationally accepted prevention and treatment program. This
will highlight the central role of the physiotherapist in the
identification, prevention and treatment of "Falls".
